Had this happen to me on Friday. I keep getting told I am lucky to be alive.
Sidewall ruptured at highway speed, just as I’m approaching an offramp, and I had to limp it to a safe spot to install my spare. Car did not flinch or pull, except the steering did correct itself 10° to the right.
Damages below.
just wow.. never had a flat tire or a blowout in my life, I dont remember panicking at any time.

That is terrifying. Glad you’re okay though. Any idea what caused that?

Yowza. That's a hell of a shredded tire. What blew the real tire?

Holy shit! Happy you’re okay. Check the ages of the rest of the tires.

probably 10 year old tires. Oh well, they served their purpose. These appeared to have sat for a while, tread was new, and was a pull-off from the parts car. this was one of the ‘good tires’ in the snow, the arcitc claws in the back were useless for grip.

that’s a good question. I didnt feel anything other than a slight tug to the right when it went. riding on the rim was a bit damaging to the steel, but it worked.

They’re all too old (2006), but were quite solid up until this point.

I had a very similar blowout on I94 in Michigan many years ago. Driving home from Detroit airport in the snow.

And this is why driving on tires with dryrotted sidewalls is a gamble.
Ya rolls the dice, ya takes your losses.

No cracking was visible, but yes, they lasted a good 4 months on the car. Not bad for a ‘free’ set of wheels.

exactly. It was a matter of time to see one of those things go.
fun fact: KanataSZ’s 505 has the worst tires still rolling. theyve been cracked for ages, (15 years old) and are still suprisingly holding air, even after doing loads of donuts and burnouts.

I stopped once and changed a tire for a guy in a suit and he gave me $20. I’d have been happy to do it for free, but I think he was on his way to a meeting. I changed a lot of tires in the Army. Makes me feel manly.

Consider yourself lucky. The last blowout I experienced resulted in the entire passenger’s front fender being ripped off the car by the flopping tire.

You aren’t winter driving anymore anywho, so might as well give them away lol. Take my Acura EL rims once the snow melts a bit, get those SiR rims restored ASAP, buy a nice set of tires from Costco, get them installed there, put on the car there and you’ve got MINT warranty on the tires and the work done.
